Hey Gorefor, good to see you, I guess pretty much most of us are busy with all sorts of other things these days. The movies, though, they keep on coming ... which is great news eh. The Japanese do seem to be on a Gore conveyor belt at present & certainly the likes that you mention of Meatball Machine & Machine Girl are to be checked out. Definitely look out for Tokyo Gore Police, due on the DVD scene soon & looking outrageously gorey with all kinds of bizarre bodily accoutrements & wickedly over the top dismemberment & freaky mutant misfits assaulting all in their path !.
The French are definitely on a role also. Inside as you mention if for sure one to check out, any story sharing will spoil the experience but be certain that the claustrophobic trapped in a house scenario is hooked up with an intense atmosphere & wall to wall blood letting of the violent kind. Frontierres is another must see French pulse pounder that dishes up old school Texas Chainsaw Massacre extreme terror with the onslaught of a The Hills Have Eyes dressing that paints the screen red. Highly anticipating the release from France of Martyrs soon also.
Philosophy Of The Knife is a four hour telling of the historic nastiness that took place in Nanking where the Japanes undertook human experimentation of the most barbaric kind in order to test the limits of human endurance. This is apparently shot in a documentary / live reinterpreation movie style that also has a living eye witness still alive from the time recounting the horrific events. Not a movie that the average movie watcher will want to experience at all, but perhaps an important document that is necessary as a reminder to what has gone before & a lesson to us all as responsible bodies to assure never occurs again !. The movie just from clips looks attritional & does not spare the viewer from intricate, detailed visuals of the acts undertaken. Shockingly startling cinema for certain !.
Barricade is another from the talented German gormeister Timo Rose. I like Timo's stuff but this left me feeling a little nauseous. It seems as if his given talent to make entertaining films with startling moments of gore has been turned upside down with Barricade, where the gore is at times unpleasent & the story line minimal in but a means to bring about the nastiness that befalls the hapless cast members.Bring on Timo's Moonlight Mountain someone please in English friendly shiny goodness. Zombie splatter, now that's where the good stuff kicks back into comfortable frantastical viewing. Star Joe Zaso, a regular cast member & associate of Timo's in recent times, appears in Rose's latest production Beast. This sounds like another fantastical return to form with creatures & dark forces occuring in Europe. Look for this early 2009.
Fans of Feast will relish the two sequels just completed. Feast II Sloppy Seconds has just hit DVD & hits the mark brilliantly. A more humourous approach but still not lacking in the bloody department. The creatures take to the streets of a neighbouring town & this time get to go about their carnivourous activities during the daylight hours. The storyboarding seems 'Borrowed' from the similairly themed humour driven classic Tremors. Great Fun & Feast II picks up right where the first ends as a new day begins. The movie is one of those rare greats that does not give in to expectant cliche's, but dares to surprise the audience in its direction with characters & events. Very much worth picking this up & looking forward to Feast III The Happy Finish soon.
Dance Of The Dead is a crowd pleasing Zombie / Humour outing that takes the best elements of Night Of The Living Dead & throws them into the blender with a revamping of the classic Night Of The Creeps. Now, as Night Of The Creeps still has not got its due release to DVD Dance Of The Dead is a welcome stopgap until that finally happens. Well worth checking out & enjoying with friends & brews. bb
